New Mexico – 2011

I headed for New Mexico in May of 2011 with the idea of heading southwest through the Lincoln National Forest and the “Billy the Kid Trail but the area was experiencing a severe fire threat and so I headed towards Clovis and then northward through Albuquerque into Colorado.

I stayed at state parks since they were affordable and offered the choice of utilities or primitive camping but all with hot showers.
I stayed at 3 state parks:
– Oasis near Clovis
– Clayton Lake near Clayton
– Villanueva near Alburque

All of them were unique in their scenery but I liked Villanueva the best since it was in a canyon near a river.  The only problem at each of the parks was the fire ban due to the lack of rain.  Clayton Lake had the best fishing and some great Dinosaur Tracks but Vilanueva had the best hiking.
