It was still spring as I continued northward from Georgia into the Carolinas. I actually had a goal in mind, to stop and visit my friend Dawn and her Mom Doreen near Asheville. After that I would head east towards the Uwharrie National Forest, visit with friends Mike and Sheri (I had met them in the Everglades over the past winter), travel through Burlington (where I once lived and worked) and then on to camp along the beach at Hatteras.
I actually managed to do all of those things and it only took about 3 weeks from the end of April to the middle of May. It was a great time to be outdoors and the weather was fabulous. I found and excellent campground at Badin Lake in the Uwharrie National Forest and then also one along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore at Oregon Inlet.
